Road Test and Review: Tata Vista D90
Indica has been an important car for Tata. Ever since its launch in 1998, the car has evolved into a capable and practical hatchback that always stayed on top of sales charts. Now in its latest Vista D90 avatar, Indica has shifted the goal posts to another pitch. Powered by a specially tuned Quadrajet diesel engine, the new Indica is a completely different animal that delivers 90PS of raw power. However, does it live up to the hype? I recently spent two days behind the wheel of the D90 to find that out.
Tata has thrown in some new design elements that reflect the sportiness of the car. However, the new bumpers and an aerodynamic rear spoiler seen in the pictures are not part of the original D90, but a body kit that you may purchase from the dealership. What come as standard are just a contrasting roof and the D90 badge at the rear.
When it comes to the interiors, the D90 receives major changes. The Manza-inspired dashboard looks pretty neat and thankfully the centre-mounted instrument cluster is back to where it belongs. The quality of dials and other bits and bobs have drastically improved. The moonlit white illumination looks classy and creates a pleasant ambiance at night.
The centre console now houses a small digital screen that shows real-time and average fuel consumption, distance-to-empty, ambient temperature and a digital clock. You also get a large multicolour touchscreen console that combines the entertainment, navigation and communication functions.
Other convenience features include 2-way adjustable steering wheel with audio/Bluetooth controls, 6-way height adjustable driver seat with lumbar support, intelligent rear wiper, electrically adjusted ORVMs, rear charging point and follow-me- home headlamps
The overall interior quality has commendably improved and like the previous editions of Indica, the D90’s USP remains the cabin space- and a lot of it.
The Quadrajet diesel engine helped by a variable geometry turbocharger and tweaked ECU develops 89bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. As the figures suggest, the motor snarls pleasantly under the whip. Low-end drivability is really good, which means you can scamper through urban traffic without much downshifting. Turbo spools in at around 2500rpm and dipping into the torque is delightful. The engine has a strong midrange, pulling eagerly till 4500rpm before the needle glows red at 5000rpm.
The D90 accelerates from 0-100kmph in 15.5 seconds and is absolutely stable at three digit speeds. Steering is on the heavier side and it gives you a confident drive, but it could be tiresome during long drives. The D90 is also equipped with a powerful air-conditioner that doesn't sap much engine power.
Suspension has been reworked to cope with the sportiness of the car and it has certainly taken its toll on ride comfort. Compared to Vista, the D90 offers a stiffer ride on rough patches but on the flipside, it handles well and has less bodyroll. Tata has engineered the D90 with a special NVH pack and it shows. Engine roar is well contained and road noise impressively low.
The D90 comes with enough safety and security features including dual front SRS airbags, crumple zones, side intrusion beams, engine immobilizer and ABS with EBD.
Tata claims a fuel economy of 21.12 kmpl and when driven sensibly, the D90 returned 19.8 kmpl on highway (with AC turned on). While exploiting the car’s full potential, however, the figure dropped to somewhere between 14 and 15 kmpl.
Having spent several hours driving the D90, I can attest that this car is a great package and is fun to drive. More remarkable is Tata’s undying effort to improve the quality of interiors. It may not be so refined as its direct competitors, but with a starting price of Rs. 5.99 lakhs (ex-showroom New Delhi), the Vista D90 gives you the best value for money.

The Tata Nano is not only the cheapest car in India, but it is the cheapest car in the world. It has a starting price of Rs. 1.56 lakhs for the Standard variant
The Maruti Suzuki Omni is the second cheapest car in the country, with the Standard BS-IV variant priced at Rs. 2.57 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Sitting at third place is India's largest selling car, the Alto, which starts at Rs. 2.59 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Standard variant.
Sitting at 4th place is Hyundai's Eon. The Eon range starts at Rs. 2.92 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base D-Lite variant
The trusty old Santro comes in at number 5 and is offered at a starting price of Rs. 3.07 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the Non-AC variant.

This electric car is the cheapest electric vehicle in India and is priced at Rs. 3.56 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Standard variant.

Tata Motors recalls 1.4 lac Nano cars
Tata Motors has asked over a lakh Nano owners to bring back their cars for a change of the starter motors. Toyota Kirloskar also launched a similar exercise for 41,000 units of the Etios and the Liva to replace a faulty inlet pipe to the fuel tank. This year there had been several recalls by automobile majors, including Honda Siel, and Maruti Suzuki

Mumbai, Dec. 26: Tata Motors has asked over a lakh Nano owners to bring back their cars for a change of the starter motors.The replacement exercise, which company officials call an "upgrade", is big considering that all the Nanos rolled out before the revamped version was launched in November this year will be impacted.
The upgrade is expected to result in a Rs 100-crore bill for the automobile major.A Tata Motors spokesperson said, "This process started in October this year and while the upgrades have already been implemented in 50,000 cars, we expect another 55,000 Nanos or so will be fitted in with the new starter motor."
By November, Tata Motors had sold 1.39 lakh Nanos, including the latest version of the small car. The company clarified that this exercise was not a recall and this effort was a continuation of its plan to enhance the car.
Last November, Tata Motors had asked roughly 70,000 customers to bring back their cars so that the company could add additional protection in the exhaust and electrical systems.At that time, Tata Motors had insisted that it was not a reaction to a spate of incidents in which the small car caught fire. Customers can rest assured that there are no generic defects in the Tata Nano," a statement by the company had said while offering these safety devices.
This time too the starter motors will be replaced free of cost just like the safety devices.
Toyota recalled all Etios sedans and Liva hatchbacks manufactured before October 8 to check their filler hose. The company said it would take around 45 minutes to check and replace the defective part, if any. It is providing the service free of cost.
The filler hose is a pipe that connects the fuel nozzle to the petrol tank. Any damage to the pipe may lead to fuel leakage and disrupt supply to the tank.The Japanese giant, present in India through a joint venture with Kirloskar Group, has organised a service campaign to check the affected parts and replace them.
Toyota, through advertisements in leading national dailies, has informed its customers that "in line with Toyota's global policy to be honest and sincere with our customers, we have as a precautionary measure organised a special service campaign".The Etios sedan and the Liva hatchback are the cash cows for Toyota. The car maker reported an over two-fold increase in sales at 13,956 units in November, driven by robust demand for its latest Etios and the Liva. The company sold 3,943 units of the Etios and 4,328 units of the Liva last month.
The company had planned to sell 60,000 units of both the Etios and Liva this year.The Liva competes with Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20 and an i10 variant, Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and Honda Jazz; the Etios competes with Maruti DZire, Tata Indigo Manza and Mahindra Logan.
In April, Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car maker, recalled 13,157 diesel engine cars across its three top selling models - Swift Dzire, Swift and Ritz, to replace suspected faulty parts.The company inspected the 'connecting rod bolt' for 13,157 units of Swift Dzire (4,505 cars), Swift (6,841 cars) and Ritz (1,811 cars) diesel cars with engines manufactured between Nov 13, 2010, and Dec 4, 2010.
According to the reports, Maruti Suzuki stated that it will inspect the 'Connecting Rod Bolt' and if the Connecting Rod Bolt is found defective, the company will replace the component free of cost.
In early 2010, Maruti Suzuki recalled almost one lakh A-Star cars to fix a defect in the fuel tank.
Japanese auto major Honda recalled 72,115 units of its mid-sized sedan City in India to replace defective power window switches as part of a global exercise. The recall covered the second generation city that was manufactured from 2005 to 2007
The third and fourth generation of the City is not affected by the recall exercise, HSCI said. Honda Motor is recalling 9.36 lakh cars, including hatchback Jazz, City and sports utility vehicle CR-V, globally due to defective power window switches and the global recall does not impact the Jazz and CR-V sold in India
In December, Honda announced that it will recall about 273,000 vehicles sold in the US to replace the driver's airbag inflator. The affected airbag inflators may deploy with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in death or injury, Xinhua reported, quoting a statement from Honda Friday. The recall includes certain Honda models between 2001 and 2003, and Acura vehicles. The company said owners should take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive mailed notification from Honda
