Exclusive First Look: The new Maruti Alto 800
We've got our hands on the first photographs of the soon-to-be-launched Maruti Alto 800. Here's a quick review
After 12 long years, Maruti Suzuki is finally updating the Alto, calling it the Alto 800.
The Alto 800 has no reference to the M800 and the name is to distinguish it from its elder K10 sibling.
The styling of the Alto 800 is very different from the model it replaces.
The company has taken heavy influence from the A-Star and the Japanese Alto. The length of the car has been reduced marginally.
The wheelbase of the Alto 800 is the same as its predecessor.
The height has been increased and so has the ground clearance. This makes the Alto 800 look out of proportion.
Step inside and you are greeted by an all new dashboard. Silver inserts on the dashboard look good, while plastic quality has been improved as well. There are quite a few storage spaces.
The new dashboard gives better knee room to the driver. The LXi variant gets front power windows, switches of which are placed right behind the gear knob. The front seats get integrated headrests too
The rear seat offers a marginal increase in legroom, courtesy of the scoops made on the back of the front seats. The Alto continues to remain low on space at the rear.
The instrument cluster has gone digital. There is a large speedometer, with all the tell-tale lights placed on the left. A digital readout gives fuel level, trip meter and odometer reading.
The Alto 800 has a stiffened chassis and tweaked suspension, which is done in the interest to improve driving dynamics. The Alto 800 drives marginally better than the old Alto
Riding on high profile narrow rubber, the Alto 800 is no driver’s car. The vague steering and average braking make the Alto 800 a car strictly for city usage
Powering the Alto 800 is a 3-cylinder, 796cc unit, which has many hardware changes. This results in an increased power output of 47.5 BHP at 6000 RPM and torque output of 69 Nm at 3500 RPM
The Alto 800 feels more eager than the old Alto. Low end response is good and there is enough grunt for city driving. Some amount of vibrations is still present though.
Gearshift quality has also improved on the new Alto. Mileage of the Alto 800 is now 22.7 km/l (as per ARAI), which is an improvement over the previous Alto.
Maruti Suzuki will also offer a CNG version of the Alto 800. This version of the Alto will be priced at a premium of Rs. 40,000/- over the petrol only variant
The new dashboard, improved engine, better quality are the positives of the Alto 800. The disproportionate styling, vague steering are the negatives of this car.
The new Alto 800 though a minor upgrade, offers quite a lot more to the buyer than the model it replaces. At a premium of Rs. 30,000/- over the old Alto, the new one will definitely appeal more to first time car buyers.

With fuel costs rising, car buyers are placing a renewed emphasis on fuel savings and higher efficiencies. That means a bigger market for the hatchbacks that offer the best mileage and lowest ownership costs, created by low initial cost of purchase as well as lower fuel use
The Tata Nano is not only the cheapest car in India, but it is the cheapest car in the world. It has a starting price of Rs. 1.56 lakhs for the Standard variant
The Maruti Suzuki Omni is the second cheapest car in the country, with the Standard BS-IV variant priced at Rs. 2.57 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Sitting at third place is India's largest selling car, the Alto, which starts at Rs. 2.59 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Standard variant.
Sitting at 4th place is Hyundai's Eon. The Eon range starts at Rs. 2.92 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base D-Lite variant
The trusty old Santro comes in at number 5 and is offered at a starting price of Rs. 3.07 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the Non-AC variant.
The re-badged Versa now starts at a price of Rs. 3.16 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the 5-seater variant. it is offered with a 1.2-liter petrol engine
Powered by a 995cc petrol engine, The Chevrolet Spark starts from Rs. Rs. 3.29 lakh (Ex-Showroom Mumbai)
Tata Motors has priced the e-Xeta at Rs. 3.32 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base eGL variant. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine.
Powered by a 998cc, K-Series engine, the Estilo range starts at Rs. 3.54 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base LX variant.
This electric car is the cheapest electric vehicle in India and is priced at Rs. 3.56 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the base Standard variant.

Top 10 cars sold in April 2012
Sales have declined for most of the cars in April 2012, thanks to the post-budget price hike. Here are the top 10 cars sold in April 2012
Maruti Suzuki Swift Taking the numero uno position as the highest selling car, the Swift sold 19484 units last month.
Maruti Suzuki Alto The Alto sales dropped by almost 50% to 17842 units, putting it at number 2
Maruti Suzuki DZire The DZire continued its strong march at 15510 units, maintaining its number 3 position
Maruti Suzuki WagonR The WagonR sales declined to 10247 units but the car continues to remain number 4 on this list
Hyundai Eon At number 5 is the Eon which sold 8541 units, even though sales declined over the previous month
Mahindra Bolero Gaining 3 places, the Bolero has reached 6th position, with 8205 units being sold
Tata Nano The world's cheapest car sold 8028 units, which keeps it at number 7. The Nano sales declined last month.
Hyundai i10 Selling 7872 units, the i10 continues to remain 8th in the top selling list in April.
Hyundai i20 Out of nowhere has the i20 emerged, selling 7562 units and jumping 7 places.
Maruti Suzuki Omni The Omni continues to sell and manages to enter the top 10, selling 7321 units last month.
