657 mobile devices were launched in India in 2011
The 881 million mobile subscribers in India, in 2011, had numerous mobile devices to choose from with models varying from the cheapest tablet of the world, Aakash, for Rs 2,500, to the latest sensation iPhone 4S which is available for around Rs 50,000.
This year saw the launch of a whopping 657 mobile devices, which include mobile phones and tablets, by Indian as well as MNC handset players in the country.
Operation system
This year saw growing demand for high-end handsets that use a mobile operating system, but Java emerged a clear winner. Of 657 handsets launched this year, 525 were based on Java with a lot of innovative offerings like web browsing, pre-loaded apps, powerful cameras, touchscreen and support for maps.
After Java, it's Android that emerged as the second-most successful operating system. In total, 100mobile devices including smartphones and tablets were launched this year running different versions of Android operating system.
Nokia's operating systems - S40, Anna and Symbian - bagged the third slot. This year, we saw Nokia launching 13 devices based on these operating systems. The fourth spot was jointly shared by iOS and BlackBerry with seven devices each launched by Apple and RIM respectively.
The latest entrant in the OS space, — Windows, bagged the fifth slot with four new smartphones. This year Samsung also launched one device based on its proprietary operating system - Bada.
Brands
In 2011, the maximum number of mobile devices were launched by Maxx Mobiles. It launched 52mobile phones in India. The second slot was bagged by Fly Mobiles with 41 new devices including one tablet and 40 feature phones.
Samsung, which has been growing by leaps and bounds in India, came out with 39 devices including the Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets. Samsung occupied the No. 3 slot jointly with Spice (S Mobility) which also launched 39 devices including a dual SIM Android smartphone.
There was a tie for the fourth slot between Videocon, which entered the mobile device segment last year, and Karbonn Mobiles. Both of them launched 35 devices each, which were mostly feature phones. Intex, an Indian handset player, bagged the fifth slot with 26 mobile phones. Notably, it launched India's first projector phone — IN 8809.
Indian handset major Micromax, which launched three Android devices this year, occupied the sixth slot with 23 new devices. Beetel, which also forayed into the mobile space for the first time, occupied the seventh slot. Beetel was in the limelight for two sub-Rs 15,000 Android tablets that it released in 2011.
LG with 17 and Onida with 16 mobile phone launches occupied the eighth and ninth slots respectively. Finnish handset major Nokia, which forayed into the dual SIM segment, and Chinese player Huawei, which launched the Ideos range of smartphones, tied at the tenth position with 15 new devices each.
There was a tie for the 11th position as well, between G'Five and Red, which launched 14 devices each in 2011. Sony Ericsson, which had launched its Xperia range of phones this year, bagged the 12th position with 13 devices. HTC and Airphone were jointly at the 13th position as they launched 12 devices each.
At the 14th position there was again a tie between Motorola and Maxphone, with 11 devices each. Philips, with 10 phones in the year 2011, stayed at the 15th place.
Overview
The key factors that contributed to this phenomenal growth in mobile phones were rapid advancements in technology, both hardware and software; the rise of dual-SIM handsets; launch of 3G services; and decrease in the average price of mobile devices.
Going by the success of so many smartphones and features phones, it looks like the introduction of innovative features with sophisticated technologies that have potential to live up to customers' growing expectations has become more of an industry norm and a challenge for existing players to survive in the market.
Another conclusion that can be drawn from the number of mobiles launched by Indian players is that they understand the growing appetite of Indian consumers and because of local advantages such as good commission agreement with distributors, low cost of manufacturing and strong links with small retailers especially in tier two and tier three cities, they have been able to strive in a highly competitive mobile space.
Moreover, Indian handset players are expected to continue their growth journey in 2012 too. When urban markets touch saturation levels, the focus is bound to shift towards the rural sector, where they have a good presence and customers are highly price sensitive. Apart from that, most buying decisions are taken at the point of sale, that is, retail shops where the salesman will try to push products that get him the maximum commission.
With increasing consumer awareness and a plethora of options, it can be inferred that in coming years mobile consumers will love to buy value for money smartphones with advanced capabilities, rather than mere communication and SMS devices.

Ten best gadgets of the year 2011
From the Samsung Galaxy S II to the Apple iPad 2, here's a look at the top gadgets of the year 2011.
Samsung Galaxy S II: One of the biggest competitor to Apple's iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy S II has sold more than 10 million units since its launch. Among the Galaxy S II's features are a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and a Super AMOLED Plus screens, which are stunningly bright and make for an extremely sharp, colorful display. The Samsung Galaxy S II is photo-ready with a built-in 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, with a 2 megapixel cam up front for video chat. All three devices can record video in 1080p HD.
Apple iPhone 4S: At about four times the US retail price where customers buy mandatory data-service plans, the Apple iPhone 4S still finds buyers among affluent young professionals in India. The final gadget unveiled during Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' lifetime, the new iPhone comes with a faster processor, a better light-sensitive camera, and voice-activated assistant 'Siri'.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 750 : Also known as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Tab 750 is seen by Apple as a real threat to the iPad. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch is an upgraded version of the 7-inch introduced in October. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on Google's newest Android version and Nvidia's dual core processor Tegra 2. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a bigger and brighter screen and weighs less than the iPad 2. However, it has access to only about half the applications Apple users do at more than 200,000 applications compared with over 425,000 applications from the Apple App store.
Apple iPad 2: The iPad 2 dominated the tablet market fighting stiff competition from Samsung and other Android based devices. The iPad 2 is 33 per cent thinner and up to 15 percent lighter than its predecessor, while it maintains the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen. The dramatically faster iPad 2 boasts a dual-core A5 "system on a chip" processor under the hood, which is good for twice the CPU power and nine times the graphics performance of the original while maintaining the same 10-hour battery life
Samsung Galaxy Nexus: While there are several smartphone manufacturers that use Google's Android operating system, the Nexus line is considered the cream of the crop. The combination of Google's software and Samsung's hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best candidates to compete with Apple's latest iPhone. With the latest version of Android under the hood, Ice Cream Sandwich, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features like a massive 4.65-inch touchscreen and the Android Beam, which lets you share such content as a Web page, map or video between two Android phones by bringing the backs of the phones close together.
Kindle Fire: Billed as the common man's tablet, Amazon's Kindle Fire has taken on technology giants Apple and Samsung in the tablet war as the largest Internet retailer revealed that it is selling more than one million Kindle devices a week. What Amazon did best was not to rush an iPad clone in the market but to play on iPad's weakness. What makes the Kindle fire standout is its 7" screen size, affordable price, unlimited cloud storage, nonstop steaming and Amazon's wealth of resources right at its fingertips.
Aakash tablet: Dubbed the world's cheapest tablet computer, Aakash is powered by Android 2.3 and has a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory. Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.
Samsung Galaxy Note: Phone? Tablet? It's a Galaxy note says the tagline of the newest member of its Galaxy lineup of smartphones and tablets. The Galaxy Note is nominally a smartphone, albeit with a massive 5.3 inch HD Super AMOLED display. The Note worked on the weakness of the Dell Streak 5 and came out with a winning device, that has a 1.4GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of built in storage. It also comes with a stylus pen, which allows users to operate the touchscreen with increased precision and convenience.
MacBook Air 13": The new MacBook Air is not quite as light as a feather, but it' s pretty darn close. Apple's MacBook Air began the anorexic laptop trend but the MacBook Air 13" take it to another level. The 13-inch MacBook Air has the latest Intel CPU and outperforms its predecessor in key ways. The notebook is also more versatile and can now be used for more mainstream function unlike the MacBook Air 11".
Nokia Lumia 800: The Nokia Lumia 800 is the first Nokia-made device to run Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system. It's also the first handset to be released in Nokia's new Lumia range. It sports a colorful polycarbonate body with subtle curves and features an expansive 3.7" curved ClearBack glass display. Inside there is a 1.4GHz processor, an 8MP camera with Auto Focus and LED flash, and 720p video recording at 30fps.

Top 10 Indian topics on Facebook in 2011
Anna Hazare and his anti-graft movement became the most discussed topic on Facebook in India for 2011. Here's a look at the others that made it to the top 10 list:
The face behind the Lokpal movement, Kisan Baburao better known as Anna Hazare was most discussed name on Facebook this year. His crusade against corruption has grabbed headlines all over and inspired the common Indian to demand for a Jan Lokpal Bill that would hold accountable the politicians for their actions. Innumerable pages were created on Facebook to show support for Anna and his anti-graft movement.
Nearly 10 years after the traumatic Sept 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon, the world's most wanted terrorist leader Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. The man who wanted to recreate a seventh-century Muslim empire was gunned down by US special forces in a helicopter-borne assault on a closely guarded compound in Abbottabad. Osama's death was the third most discussed topic in India.
Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh death was the fourth most discussed topic on Facebook. Jagjit Singh has died after several weeks in the hospital following a brain hemorrhage. Born on February 8, 1941, Jagjit Singh was a singer, composer, activist and entrepreneur. He has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. His voice ruled during early 80's in films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth. However, his major work is spread over more than 60 filmy and non filmy albums.
Steve Jobs' death became the fifth most discussed topic on Facebook. On October 5, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, passed away. Jobs was considered brilliant yet brash. He valued elegance in design yet was almost never seen in public wearing anything but a black mock turtleneck, blue jeans, and a few days worth of stubble. A master salesman who considered himself an artist at heart, Jobs inspired both reverence and fear in those who worked for him and against him, and was adored by an army of loyal Apple customers who almost saw him as superhuman.
Yuvraj Singh's name appears sixth on the list. In sickness and in health, Yuvraj Singh, tends to leave the nation in a spin. In the best of times, he makes India win the Cricket World Cup. In the worst of times, he ties the nation up in knots of tension. A shock announcement on November 26, that he is battling a tumour in his left lung, has sent a wave of visceral anxiety through the cricket-crazy country.
Imtiaz Ali's 'Rockstar' is a passionate ride, an emotional high that only a passion for music and intense love can evoke. He blends these two to make a film about emotions that do not follow the diktats of logic.Ranbir as the anguished and disturbed rockstar does a commendable job. The character's aggression does not stem from his arrogance but from the internal turmoil that's burning him. Ranbir has indeed come a long way from his first 'towel dance' in 'Saawariya'. It's something to conceive a character like that on paper but the brilliant execution of such a complex character is indeed admirable.
Indian skipper appears eighth on the list. Dhoni ended India's 28-year-long wait for a World Cup win and led the team to world's No. 1 Test status. What makes Dhoni click seems to defy logic but what makes him a hero to millions makes more sense - he hails from a small-town with modest means and unlike other success stories, Dhoni has shown that anyone with hard work and excellence can make it big today.
The India National Congress was the ninth most discussed topic this year. The Congress party has been in the news for issues like - price rise, 2G spectrum case, Anna Hazare's anti-graft campaign and inflation. The recent controversy over Internet censorship and the issue of FDI in retail sector has made the party a most talked about topic on Facebook.

Top 10 Cars of 2011
2011 was an eventful and competitive year for the automobile industry, with the launch of some pathbreakers like Hyundai Eon and Mahindra XUV5oo. Yet, hatchbacks continue to rule the growing car market in India and the segment has been abuzz with foreign players reinforcing the competition. There were more than enough reasons for the middle-class car buyers to rejoice, however, we boil down our choices to 10 and here is what we cooked up.
Perhaps the most anticipated car ever? A car that had been the subject of speculation for over a year and clocked nearly 50K pre-launch bookings. When launched, Suzuki had done a commendable job of not tampering with the Swift persona while giving it a head-to-toe facelift. Every body-panel of the new Swift is spanking new. The car has an energetic and vibrant front fascia thanks to the swept-back, rather large headlamps, completely reworked grille and a smiling central air intake. If you said the Swift is identical to its predecessor, eat your words. Step inside the cabin. Apart from the gear knob and power window switches, everything has been given a chic makeover. The dashboard sports the Kizashi family look with the ‘waterfall’ central console that houses a six-speaker music system with USB support and climate control on the top variants. The new Swift is powered by the same 1.2 litre K-series petrol engine, further tweaked with the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) technology. The result: Increased power delivery of 87ps @ 6000rpm and torque of 114Nm @ 4000 rpm. The 1.3 litre DDiS diesel motor is already a champ, and so remains unchanged. However, the overall weight of the car has been reduced by 15 kg and 30 kg respectively on the Petrol and Diesel variants, boosting overall performance and fuel efficiency. The new car is 90mm longer, with a 40mm longer wheelbase. Those who quibbled about lack of ample rear legroom can now rejoice. Despite the car’s added heft,
When you think Hyundai, the word 'style' pops unbidden to mind. Whether it's an i10, Verna, Sonata or Santa Fe, the company never compromises on style and seamless finish. Underscoring this fact is Eon, the latest offering from the Hyundai stable that hit the Indian market at a jaw-dropping price of 2.69 lakh. The Eon is an amalgamation of style, comfort, utility and economy. Eon’s fluidic design has exceeded the expectations of the entry-level segment customer. Currently, Eon is available with 0.8 L iRDE engine delivering 56PS@5500rpm of maximum power and 7.65Kgm@4000rpm of peak torque. mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the 814cc petrol engine gives a mileage of 21.1kmpl (ARAI certified) making it the most fuel-efficient car in the segment. Despite being a small car, Eon has ample cabin and boot spacein an attempt to offer high-end safety features even for low compact segment customers, Hyundai has equipped the Eon with driver’s airbag, front fog lamps and an immobilizer that prevents the car from starting without the correct key. In short, Hyundai Eon is true value for money.
Read it -- Tata Vista. The Indica badge at the car’s rear has shrunk. So has its Indica-ness. The car’s first major makeover in three years is Tata’s clear attempt to get deep into the premium hatchback segment and make it a popular choice among those who hesitate to proudly say, ‘I drive a Tata Indica’. The new Vista shares its front fascia with its elder sibling Manza. The chrome grille and larger triple barreled head lamps make its face more belligerent – and upmarket. The interior is where the new Vista makes the real difference. Available in four trims, the car offers integrated six-speaker music system with steering-mounted audio controls, USB support and Bluetooth connectivity on all but the base variant. Steering-mounted controls on the lower variants – isn’t that a revolution in this segment? The basic underpinnings of the newcomer are carried over from the previous-generation car. Petrol buyers can choose from 90PS Safire90 and 65PS Safire65, while the diesel line-up consists of a 71PS TDi and a 75PS Quadrajet. Yahoo! India Autos’ favourite is the 1.3 litre CRDI Quadrajet, which really loves to rev and delivers 75PS of max power at 4000 RPM. The new Tata Vista is claimed to deliver a mileage of 22.3 kmpl for diesel and 16.7 kmpl for petrol. While the car lives up to Tata’s promise of “more car per car”, the company needs to relook at the service quality and durability concerns so that the new Vista gets an edge in the overcrowded B-segment.
Energetic and cheerful, as the name suggests, the Honda Brio is a perfect package for a new era, embodying the best of Honda’s technologies to deliver fun and agile driving, fuel-efficiency, spaciousness and safety. Brio’s energetic exterior concept features a ‘Double Triangle’ design, conveying vibrant energy from nose to tail, and a sleek look that emphasizes its width and advanced styling. Brio has an impressive interior design that leverages its innovative packaging to offer occupants an open and spacious interior. The Brio’s design takes Honda’s “man maximum, machine minimum” concept to a new level. The Brio’s is powered by a four cylinder 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine that delivers maximum output of 88 PS @ 6000 rpm and Torque of 109 Nm (11.2 kg-m) @ 4600 rpm, while giving an excellent fuel economy of 18.4 km/l, as per test data. Brio is available in 5-speed manual transmission with optimized gear ratios, which offers good low rpm acceleration and smooth high rpm making it fun to drive. The Brio features Honda’s active and passive safety technologies including dual SRS front airbags, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), front pretensioner seat belts that pre-emptively tighten the belt to prevent the occupant from jerking forward in a crash and impact-mitigating headrests.
The Chevrolet Beat belongs to 22nd century. With its futuristic styling, Beat can be considered as the most unique model in the current crop of hatchbacks in India. The little monster got smarter with an all new 1.0 XSDE SMARTECH Common Rail Diesel engine that Chevrolet made exclusively for India. With an amazing power output of 58.5 PS and a whopping torque of 150 Nm, this engine promises a certified mileage of 24 kmpl. The car feels most comfortable at speeds under 80-90 kmph, but post that it doesn't seem to have the p to go comfortably past 100-110 kph. Fixed Geometry Turbocharger with vacuum operated wastegate ensures smooth, efficient operation and superior torque delivery from very low engine RPMs for a peppy drive. The Diesel Beat, like its petrol sibling, represents the new face of Chevrolet. Even though the car is cramped inside, the amount of storage spaces it offers is incredible. Under the skin, the Beat is pretty conventional, but step inside, the imposing interior quality makes the Beat quite a special place to be in. Beat is a very competent vehicle that rides well and comes with decent comfort and practicality. The vehicle is destined to make a statement with an innovative design that would go far beyond a typical mini-vehicle and set new standards for the segment. In short, the Beat is an easy-to-drive city commuter for those who would otherwise buy a petrol i10, but would want a diesel given the skyrocketing petrol prices.
2011 was a remarkable year for Toyota in India. After the success of the Etios and the Etios Liva, Toyota further expanded the product range by launching the diesel variants of Etios and Etios Liva. The twins are powered by the 1.4 litre diesel engine that also powers the Corolla Altis diesel. These cars are exceptionally practical vehicles in terms of their design, space and pricing. Like the petrol variants, the engine is tuned for efficiency rather than performance. A distinctive front grille with a smile line, sculpted surface and dynamic character-line in the front and rear enhance the presence of the Etios and Etios Liva. The roof has a unique design for better aerodynamics and clean appearance. While the cars offer good rear seat space, large boot and airy interiors, cheap plastic quality and mediocre fit and finish are quite unbecoming Toyota. However, the flat type rear floor design is unique and offers comfortable seating for three and ease of movement for rear seat passengers. The cars have various active and passive safety features like energy absorbing body shell, driver and passenger air bags and ABS with EBD. Its centrally located combimeter reduces eye movement and apparently the driver can concentrate on the road. The Etios and Etios Liva diesel might not be the most exciting diesels around, but they are practical and versatile diesel machines.
Sunny, Nissan’s premium sedan for India, catches the eye with well-sculpted exterior, with every line carved to perfection. Attractive and sleek, featuring Nissan’s signature grille and jewel-like headlamps, the Sunny displays a pronounced high running beltline that slopes from the headlamps, with the roof inclined elegantly to the rear, giving it the appeal of a coupĂ©. The Sunny’s USP is space, especially in the backseat. You can cross your legs comfortably even when the front seats are pushed back completely. You have to agree with Nissan’s claim that the interior space matches that of the BMW 5-series or Mercedes-Benz E-class. However, Sunny has a lot of Micra in it. Apart from the instrument panel, music system and A/C vents on the centre console, everything else has pretty much been inherited from the Micra. Behind the wheel, the Sunny impresses with its smooth, quiet ride and is adept on demanding country roads. Only the merest flutter of wind noise is noticeable even at 120 kmph, and although some road noise intrudes on rough surfaces, it’s never a bother. The 1.5 litre petrol engine develops 98 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 134 Nm of torque at 4000rpm, which makes it more powerful than many others in the segment. The meaty part of the torque is at the low end of the rev range, making it responsive and easy to maneuver. Overall, it’s hard to think of a box that the Nissan Sunny doesn’t tick.
The Fluidic Verna boasts of futuristic looks, luxurious interiors, cutting-edge technology and premium appeal. It pioneers a host of premium and futuristic design elements based on the Fluidic Sculpture Design Philosophy. The car’s futuristic design sports a coupe like side profile, which is further refined by elegant lines. The interiors have luxurious elements and textures including two-tone beige and black high gloss interiors with wood finish. One of the unique features of the Fluidic Verna is the cluster ionizer that improves the quality of air inside the cabin by producing ion-plasma that traps bacteria and other impurities and comes into operation automatically as the AC is switched on. The rear end of the car is fitted with dual chrome tipped exhaust which adds on to the sporty feel. The Verna will be available with four engine options - 1.4 litre VTVT, 1.6 litre VTVT, 1.4 litre CRDi and the diesel 1.6 litre VGT CRDi. The Fluidic Verna is an amalgamation of practicality and quality that is more upmarket and stylish, making it a serious threat to the City and Vento.
You probably think a mid-life makeover of the Tata Aria isn't worth your time. You might be making a hasty judgment there. The Tata Aria 4x2 is not just another makeover. It extends the range to new segments and redefines several benchmarks by slashing prices by a whopping Rs. 1.3 lakh. If that isn’t incentive enough, take it on a drive to find out whether Aria 4X2 will be a game changer for Tata. The angular, wrap-around dual-barrel headlamp with projector beam and the signature Tata grille that we saw on Vista and Manza give Aria an aggressive look. Step in, oh sorry, walk-in (Passengers can simply walk into the Aria, rather than having to climb up or get down, thanks to the low-floor design) and you'll be quite impressed, rather surprised. The incredibly spacious cabin has three-row seats that are strategically arranged to provide passengers with acres of head, leg and shoulder rooms. Tata had taken safety to new heights with the Aria 4X4. Aria 4X2 also benefits from the same features, both active and passive, that only vehicles over Rs 30 lakh can boast of. While active features like ABS, EBD and all disc brakes aid steerability and control in emergency braking, driver and passenger airbags ensure protection from front impacts. At the heart of the Tata Aria is the same 2.2 litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) engine that powers the 4X4 Aria. The potent motor has an astonishing spread of power, pulling hard from low in the rev range and getting progressively
